The current problems in primary care, the lack of doctors and healthcare workers, long waiting times and poor patient service are pressing matters for any medical institution. Spain is the second country in the world with the most medical schools when ranked by population density, and yet according to the Spanish Medical Colleges Organisation (OMC), the country is lacking some 5,000 doctors. The situation is similar when it comes to other health professionals. Estimated figures provided by Spain’s General Nursing Council (CGE) suggest that there would need to be another 100,000 nurses to simply equal the European average. According to Accenture, artificial intelligence could cover 20 % of this shortage, as well as saving up to €150 billion per year.

AI applied to healthcare solves a multitude of problems: diagnostic algorithms, task automation, scalability, 24/7 availability, lower treatment costs, etc. However, only digital humans are capable of offering these advantages while maintaining the much-needed humanity in medical and health care.

Machines, robots and chatbots can become all-powerful and infallible but they will never be able to bring warmth, empathy and the much-needed “human factor” when treating and accompanying patients. Digital humans, on the other hand, can do just that. Welcome to the future of healthcare.
